How Are Implant-supported Dentures Different?

Traditional dentures are a trusted and cost-effective tooth replacement solution. However, implant-supported restorations are superior in several ways:

Improved Bone Health

Traditional dentures only replace the portion of the teeth visible above the gumline. While this can improve your appearance and function, it fails to address an important aspect of our natural teeth. Dental roots provide stimulation to the jaw and when teeth are lost or extracted, the nearby bone will atrophy. Surgically placed implants duplicate this function and help maintain a dense, healthy jawbone.  

Greater Stability

Most denture patients have experienced the slipping or sliding of their dentures, which can create potentially embarrassing situations. Dental implants fuse with the bone during a process called osseointegration. Once dentures are attached to the posts, they will remain firmly fixed in place until you or your dentist removes them. Fewer Adjustments

Implant-supported dentures usually require fewer adjustments than traditional restorations. Traditional dentures can wear on the underlying soft tissue, and change a patient's face shape over time. This requires periodic adjustments to ensure a proper fit, which can be frustrating and also contribute to the overall treatment cost. 

Your Treatment Process

Dr. Kubit will evaluate your candidacy for implant-supported dentures during an initial consultation. She can then refer you to an oral surgeon, who will determine whether any prerequisite procedures are necessary, such as bone grafting or a sinus lift. 

On the day of your surgery, the surgeon will make you comfortable with a combination of local anesthesia and sedation, if needed. Incisions will be made in the gums and four or more implants will be placed within the jaw. Patients who receive just four posts, a technique known as All-on-4®, can often avoid the need for a bone graft or sinus lift. In certain cases, especially for these patients, a denture can be immediately attached. 

With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Patients must wait three to six months before receiving their permanent, customized denture. This period allows the treatment site to heal and osseointegration to take place. Patients can choose from fixed or removable implant-supported dentures. Dr. Kubit will review at-home care instructions with you, which will vary slightly depending on which type you choose.
